Origins and purpose
Historical context
German battleship construction resumed during the naval rearmament of the 1930s. The Scharnhorst class combined high speed and heavy armor with 28 cm guns, while the later Bismarck class carried the 38 cm artillery expected of contemporary battleships. Their wartime role shifted between Atlantic commerce warfare, operations against Arctic convoys and the strategic threat created simply by remaining ready for sea.
