Origins and purpose

Historical context

The Treaty of Versailles restricted new German armored ships to a declared displacement of 10,000 tons. Designers answered with diesel-powered Panzerschiffe carrying six 28 cm guns: ships able to outgun most cruisers and outrun the older battleships that could defeat them. Their long range made commerce warfare the central idea behind the class.
