01.09.1939:   Together with the cruisers Köln , Leipzig , Nürnberg and other destroyers operations in the Danzig Beight.
08.09.1939:   Friedirch Ihn  and the mine layers Cobra and Roland , the Erich Giese lays the mine field "1" and "2" MARTHA-GUSTAV in the North Sea. 752 Mines are laid during this operation, 202 from  Friedirch Ihn .
07-09.10.1939:  

Raid to intercept Britain - Scandinavia trade together with battleship Gneisenau , CL Köln and destroyers Wilhlem Heidkamp , Diether von Roeder ,  Karl Galster , Max Schulz ,  Paul Jakobi ,  Bernd von Arnim ,  Erich Steinbrinck and Friedrich Eckoldt . No results.

12-13.12.1939:   Mine laying operation together with the destroyers Erich Steinbrinck , Bruno Heinemann, Hermann Künne and Richard Beitzen against Newcastle. The returning ships are escorted by the light cruisers Nürnberg , Leipzig and Köln . Nürnberg and Köln are both hit by torpedoes of the British submarine Salmon .
06-07.01.1940:   Mine laying operations together with the destroyers Friedrich Eckold, Erich Steinbrinck, Karl Galster, Richard Beitzen and Hermann Schoemann against the Themse estuary.
10-11.01.1940:   Mine laying operations together with the destroyers Anton Schmitt , Karl Galster , Richard BeitzenWilhelm Heidkamp  and Friedrich Eckold against Newcastle.
25-28.07.1940:   Transfer of the damaged Gneisenau back to Germany, the battleship is escorted by light cruiser Nürnberg and the destroyers Hans Lody , Paul Jakobi , Friedrich Ihn and Karl Galster, the torpedo boats Iltis , Jaguar , Kondor , Luchs and T5 .
09-11.09.1940:   Together with Karl GalsterHans Lody , Theodor Riedel and Friedrich EckoldFriedrich Ihn is sent to Cherbourg.
19-20.09.1940:   Transfer to Brest.
28-29.09.1940:   Mine laying operation at Falmouth Bay together with the destroyers Friedrich Eckold, Theodor Riedel , Hans Lody , Karl Galster , Paul Jakobi and Erich Steinbrinck .
17-18.10.1940:   Operation against the Bristol Channel together with the destroyers Erick Steinbrinck , Hans Lody , Karl Galster and the torpedo boats Falke , Greif , Jaguar , Kondor , Seeadler and Wolf . Short engangement with British cruisers and destroyers.
05-07.11.1940:   Paul Jakobi , Theodor Riedel , Friedrich Eckold , Erich Steinbrinck and Friedrich Ihn are returned to Germany.
04-06.04.1941:   Erich Steinbrinck , Bruno Heinemann and Friedrich Ihn are sent to Brest.
19-20.04.1941:   The destroyers Erich Steinbrinck , Bruno Heinemann and Friedrich Ihn are transfered to La  Pallice.
22-23.04.1941:   Erich Steinbrinck , Bruno Heinemann and Friedrich Ihn escort the auxiliary cruiser Thor in the Biscay.
28-29.04.1941:   Erich Steinbrinck , Bruno Heinemann and Friedrich Ihn are relocated to Bordeaux.
18.05.1941:   The Troßschiff Nordmark is escorted by the destroyers Erich Steinbrinck , Bruno Heinemann and Friedrich Ihn from Le Havre to Boulogne.
20-26.05.1941:   Operation Rheinübung: The destroyers Friedrich Eckold , Hans Lody , Friedirch Ihn , Erich Steinbrinck , Karl Galster and Z20 escort the battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen from the Baltic Sea to Trondheim. After that, the destroyers return to Germany.
01-02.06.1941:   Operation Rheinübung: Bruno Heinemann and Friedrich Ihn escort the returing heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen to Brest.
20-22.07.1941:   The 5th destroyer flotilla of Erich Steinbrinck , Friedrich Ihn , Bruno Heinemann , Z23 and Z24 is sent from La Pallice to Brest. On their way back, they escort the battleship Scharnhorst on its way to La Pallice.
24-27.07.1941:   The 5th destroyer flotilla consisting of Erich Steinbrinck , Friedrich Ihn , Bruno Heinemann , Z23 and Z24 escort the bomb damaged battleship Scharnhorst from La Pallice to Brest.
27-28.07.1941:   Friedrich Ihn is sent back to Germany.
29.1-03.02.1942:   Friedrich Ihn and Z29 transfer to Brest.
12-13.02.1942:   Operation "Cerberus": On board of Z29 , the "Füher der Zerstöer" and the destroyers Richard Beitzen , Paul Jakobi , Hermann Schoemann , Friedrich Ihn, Z25 and the torpedo boats T2T4 , T4 , T11 , T13 , T15 , T16 , T17 Seeadler , Kondor , Jaguar , Falke and iescort the battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen through the Channel from Brest ot Germany.
21-23.02.1942:   Richard Beitzen , Paul Jacobi , Hermann Schoemann , Friedrich Ihn , Z25 and the torpedo boat Jaguar escort the heavy cruisers Prinz Eugen and Admiral Scheer on their way to Bergen.
23-24.02.1942:   Transfer of the 5th destroyer flotilla consiting of Richard Beitzen , Paul Jacobi , Hermann Schoemann , Friedrich Ihn and Z25 to Trondheim.
06-10.03.1942:   Arctic Sea operation with battleship Tirpitz : Friedrich Ihn , Paul Jacobi , Hermann Schoemann , Z25 , T5 and T12 are used as escorts. During the operation Friedrich Ihn sinks the Sowjet transport Izora .
12-13.03.1942:   Friedrich Ihn , Hermann Schoemann , Z25 , T5 and T12 escort the battleship Tirpitz during its transfer from the Bogenbucht to Trondheim.
03-06.07.1942:   Operation Rösselsprung:
In a major operation of the battleship Tirpitz and the heavy cruisers Admiral Scheer , Lützow and Admiral Hipper against the allied convoy PQ17, several destroyers and torpedo boats escort the capital ships: Friedrich Ihn , Hans Lody , Karl Galster , Theodor Riedel , Richard Beitzen , Friedrich Eckoldt , Erich Steinbrinck , Z24 , Z27 , Z28 , Z29 , Z30 , T7 and T15 . The operation is cancelled, but the convoy is heaviely attacked by U-boats and the Luftwaffe.
08-10.07.1942:   Covered by the destroyers Friedrich Ihn and Z24 and the torpedo boats T7 and T15 the heavy cruiser Lützow transfers to Trondheim. 
14-15.07.1942:   Mine laying operation in the North Sea by light cruiser Köln and destroyers Friedrich Ihn , Friedrich Eckoldt and Z24 .
15-17.07.1942:   Friedrich Ihn and Z24 return to Germany.
24-25.08.1942:   Richard Beitzen , Friedrich Ihn and Erich Steinbrinck escort the minelayer Ulm during a mine laying operation north of North Norway. After the destroyers leave the minelayer, it is sunk by the British destroyers Marne , Martin and Onslought.
