Origins and purpose
Historical context
After the First World War, Germany was permitted to retain a small number of obsolete pre-dreadnought battleships. Schlesien and Schleswig-Holstein belonged to that inherited fleet. Far too slow and lightly protected to confront modern warships, they served as training ships, coastal artillery platforms, icebreakers and fire-support vessels across two very different naval eras.
